Thailand: Departing from Rome

The Holy Father, Pope Francis began his 32nd International Apostolic Voyage today, taking him to Thailand and Japan.

At 6:20pm local time (12:20pm EST), he left the Vatican and travelled by car to Rome's Fiumicino International Airport.  The flight, an Alitalia A330 departed at 7:16pm local time (1:16pm EST).

At 6:00pm local time (noon EST), before he left the Casa Santa Marta, the Pope met with some elderly persons who are staying with the Little Sisters of the Poor at Saint Peter in Chains.  The small group was accompanied by the Apostolic Almoner, His Eminence, Cardinal Konrad Krajewski.

The plane carrying the Holy Father is expected to arrive in Bangkok at 12:30pm local time (12:30am EST).

At the moment when he left Italy, the Holy Father, Pope Francis sent the following message to the President of the Italian Republic.

At the moment when I am leaving Italy to pay a Pastoral Visit to Thailand and Japan, where I fervently wish to meet my brothers in the faith and the inhabitants of those noble nations, I address to you, Mister President, and to the entire Italian nation, the expression of my benevolent greetings, which are accompanied with my cordial wishes for serenity and mutual cooperation for the common good.
