Departure from Baku

Shortly before 7:00pm local time, at the Heydar Aliyev international airport in Baku (Azerbaijan), there was a departure ceremony held, marking the end of Pope Francis' visit to that country.  In the presence of the Deputy Prime Minister and a guard of honour.

The Pope boarded the A321 Alitalia aircraft which lifted off at 7:05pm (11:05am EDT) for the return flight to Italy.  Arrival in Rome was estimated at 10:00pm local time, following a flight of 4 hours and 45 minutes in duration.

addressed to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan

Immediately after leaving the airport in Baku, Pope Francis sent the following message to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan:

His Excellency, Ilham Aliyev
President of the Republic of Azerbaijan
Baku

As I depart for my return flight to Rome, I wish to express my deep gratitude to Your Excellency and the beloved people of Azerbaijan for your welcome and hospitality.  Upon the nation, I willingly invoke the divine blessings of peace and prosperity.
