At the conclusion of his meeting with the Bishops of Bangladesh, the Holy Father, Pope Francis met briefly with a group of Rohingya refugees in the gardens outside the Archbishop's residence in Dhaka.
Dear brothers and sisters, we are all close to one another. There is very little that any of us can do because your tragedy is great. But let us make some space in our hearts. In the name of all people, those who are being persecuted, those who have caused harm, above all for indifference in the world, we ask forgiveness. Forgiveness. Many of you have told me about the generosity of Bangladesh who has welcomed you. Now, I appeal to your own hearts, that they may be large enough to be able to grant forgiveness to those who ask for it.
Dear brothers and sisters, the Judeo-Christian story of creation says that the Lord who is God created man in his own image and likeness. We are all that image. Even tese brothers and sisters. Even they are the image of the living God. A tradition from your religions says that in the beginning, God took a bit of salt and threw it into the water, and this salt was the soul of every man; every one of us carries within us a bit of divine salt. These brothers and sisters carry within them the salt of God.
Dear brothers and sisters, let us show the world what the world's egotism does to the image of God. Let us continue to do good to and for all people, to help them; let us continue to act so that their rights might be recognized. Let us not close our hearts, let us not look upon the world from some other place. The presence of God, today, is also called Rohingya. It is up to each of us to give our own response.
