Visiting with children

At 10:30am today (Rome time), in the Paul VI Hall at the Vatican, the Holy Father, Pope Francis received in audience the children who are patients at the Santa Marta Paediatric Hospital.

Unscripted greetings of the Holy Father, Pope Francis
offered to children from the Santa Marta Hospital

Good morning!

The joy of children ... The joy of children is a treasure.  Happy children ... We need to do everything we can so that they will continue being happy, because joy is like good earth.  A joyous soul is like good earth in which life can sprout and grow, and bear good fruit.  This is the reason why we are having this party: we always want Christmas to be close in order to gather us together so that we can have a party for these children.

Listen.  The first thing is: take good care of children's joy.  Don't sadden children.  When children see that there are problems at home, that their parents are fighting, they suffer.  Don't sadden children.  They always need to grow in joy.  Are you happy?  (Yes!).  I don't think so: yes or no?  (Yes!)  Very good.  This is joy.

The second thing is, so that children can grow well: help them to speak with their grandparents.  The two extremes of life.  Because grandparents have memories, they are the roots, and it's up to grandparents to share roots with children.  Please, don't allow these children to live without their roots, without memories about who they are, without memory about their faith, without memory about many beautiful things that are part of history, without any memory of values.  And who will help these children to do this?  Their grandparents.  They need to speak with their grandparents, with the elderly.  Do you speak with your grandparents?  (Yes!)  Are you sure? (Yes!)  To ask for candy?  (No!)  No?  Tell me ... Sometimes, many times you visit with your grandparents, right?  But there are many other elderly who are grandparents.  Always speak with the elderly.  Ask them something, they will have good answers: grandparents, elderly people, are they boring?  (No ... Yes)  You ... (They give us lots of gifts).  This child is interested: they give us lots of gifts!  They aren't boring, they are good.  Tell me ... (They love us a lot).  They love us very much.  May children learn to speak with the elderly, with their grandparents.

And the third piece of advice that I want to give you: teach them to speak with God.  May they learn how to pray, to say what they are feeling in their hearts.

Joy, speak with grandparents, with the elderly, and speak with God.  Do you agree?  Are we all in agreement?  Even you, do you agree?  I wish you a good day, a joyous party.  And eat all 4 metres of pizza: eat well, it will be good for you, it will help you to grow.  Keep going!  Thank you, thank you!

And now, let us all pray to Our Lady so that she can bless us:  Hail Mary ...

(Blessing)

And pray for me!
