Departure from Latvia

At 5:45pm local time (10:45am EDT), at the heliport of Aglona, there was a departure ceremony held to mark the departure of the Holy Father from Latvia.

Upon his arrival there, the Holy Father was greeted by the President of the Republic, Raimonds Vējonis.

The members of the respective delegations were then presented as were the members of the honour guard.  The Pope then climbed aboard the helicopter for the return flight to Vilnius (Lithuania).  He was expected to arrive in Lithuania at 7:30pm local time (12:30pm EDT) and from there, he returned to the Apostolic Nunciature in Vilnius.

Telegram of the Holy Father

At the moment when he departed from Latvian airspace, the Holy Father sent the following telegram to the President of the Republic:

His Excellency, Raimonds Vējonis
President of the Republic of Latvia
Riga

As I depart from Latvia to continue my Apostolic Journey to Estonia, I renew my deep gratitude to Your Excellency, the Government and the beloved people of Latvia for your warm welcome and generous hospitality.  Invoking abundant divine blessings upon all of you, I offer the assurance of my prayers for peace and harmony in the nation.

Franciscus
