Newest Cardinals created

During today's Angelus address, the Holy Father, Pope Francis announced the names of some new Cardinals who will be created during an upcoming Consistory which will be celebrated on February 14 of this year.

Announcement made by the Holy Father, Pope Francis
of the names of newly-created Cardinals

As previously announced, on February 14 of this year, I will have the joy of holding a Consistory, during which I will create fifteen (15) new Cardinals who, coming from fourteen (14) different countries and from every continent of the world, demonstrate the inseparable bond between the Church of Rome and the various particular Churches throughout the world.

On Sunday, February 15, I will preside over a solemn concelebration of the Mass with the newly-created Cardinals, but on February 12 and 13, I will hold a gathering of all the Cardinals to reflect on the guidelines and proposals for reforming the Roman Curia.

The new Cardinals include:

1.  His Eminence, Dominique Mamberti, Titular Archbishop of Sagona, Prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura;

2.  His Eminence, Manuel José Macário do Nascimento Clemente, Patriarch of Lisbon (Portugal);

3.  His Eminence, Berhaneyesus Demerew Souraphiel, C.M., Archbishop of Addis Ababa (Ethiopia);

4.  His Eminence, John Atcherley Dew, Archbishop of Wellington (New Zealand);

5.  His Eminence, Edoardo Menichelli, Archbishop of Ancona-Osimo (Italy);

6.  His Eminence, Pierre Nguyên Văn Nhon, Archbishop of Hà Nôi (Viêt Nam);

7.  His Eminence, Alberto Suárez Inda, Archbishop of Morelia (Mexico).

8.  His Eminence, Charles Maung Bo, S.D.B., Archbishop of Yangon (Myanmar);

9.  His Eminence, Francis Xavier Kriengsak Kovithavanji, Archbishop of Bangkok (Thailand);

10.  His Eminence, Francesco Montenegro, Archbishop of Agrigento (Italy);

11.  His Eminence, Daniel Fernando Sturla Berhouet, S.D.B., Archbishop of Montevidero (Uruguay);

12.  His Eminence, Ricardo Blázquez Pérez, Archbishop of Valladolid (Spain);

13.  His Eminence, José Luis Lacunza Maestrojuán, O.A.R., Bishop of David (Panamá);

14.  His Eminence, Arlindo Gomes Furtado, Bishop of Santiago de Cabo Verde (Cape Verde Arcipelago); and

15.  His Eminence, Soane Patita Paini Mafi, Bishop of Tonga (Island of Tonga).

In addition, five other Archbishops and Bishops emeritus who are distinguished for their pastoral charity and service to the Holy See and to the Church will also be added to the College of Cardinals.  They represent many bishops who, with the same pastoral solicitude, have borne witness to love for Christ and for the People of God either in the particular Churches, the Roman Curia or the Holy See's Diplomatic Service.  They are:

1.  His Eminence, José de Jesús Pimiento Rodríguez, Archbishop emeritus of Manizales (Columbia);

2.  His Eminence, Luigi De Magistris, titular Archbishop of Nova, Major Pro-Penitentiary emeritus;

3.  His Eminence, Karl-Joseph Rauber, titular Archbishop of Giubalziana, Apostolic Nuncio (retired 2009);

4.  His Eminence,  Luis Héctor Villalba, Archbishop emeritus of Tucumán (Argentina); and

5.  His Eminence, Júlio Duarte Langa, Bishop emeritus of Xai-Xai (Mozambique).

Let us pray for these new Cardinals, that renewed in their love for Christ, they may bear witness to his gospel in the city of Rome and throughout the world and that through their pastoral experience, they may support me more intensely in my apostolic service.
