A few weeks ago, Salt+Light Television debuted an interview that was conducted with Phyllis Zagano regarding the books she has written concerning the subject of women in ministry in the Catholic Church.
This Sunday, Salt+Light will screen a Witness interview with Ms. Zagano for the very first time.
Phyllis Zagano is Senior Research Associate-in-Residence and Adjunct Professor of Religion at Hofstra University, where she has continued her research in Christian spirituality and the history of women in the Church since 2002. Prior to that, she held joint appointments to the faculties of theology, communications, and international relations at Boston University. She has also taught at Fordham and Yale Universities. She holds a baccalaureate degree from Marymount College, Tarrytown, New York, a Ph.D. from Stony Brook University, and Master’s degrees from Boston University, Long Island University, and St. John’s University.
Her 22 books include the award-winning Holy Saturday: An Argument for the Restoration of the Female Diaconate in the Catholic Church (Crossroad), and Women & Catholicism: Gender, Communion, and Authority (Palgrave-Macmillan). Her other books include In the Image of Christ: Essays on Being Catholic and Female (ACTA), Women Deacons? Essays with Answers (Liturgical), Women Deacons: Past, Present, Future (Paulist), and Women in Ministry (Paulist), all investigating questions about women in the diaconate.
She has published hundreds of articles and reviews in a wide variety of journals in the United States and abroad, including America, Commonweal, Doctrine and Life, Harvard Divinity Bulletin, Horizons, Journal of Ecumenical Studies, Journal of Pastoral Counseling, New Blackfriars, Religious Life Review, Review for Religious, Sojourners, Spiritus, The Furrow, Theological Studies, The Tablet, The Way, Worship, and U.S. Catholic. Her column Just Catholic appears online and in print in the National Catholic Reporter and other publications around the world.
Phyllis is a retired Commander, U.S. Navy, having served 31 years combined active and reserve duty as a public affairs officer. On August 2, 2016 she was appointed by Pope Francis to the Papal Commission on Women in the Diaconate.
