Condolences to Chile

Yesterday, the Holy Father, Pope Francis sent a telegram of condolence to the Bishop of Valparaiso, expressing his prayers for the victims of a catastrophic fire which began on Saturday in that city.

Having received the sad news of the terrible fire which affected the city of Valparaiso, Pope Francis wishes to express his spiritual closeness to all the people, and offers his prayers for those who have died in this serious disaster, while at the same time sharing the heartbreak of many who have lost their homes and their possessions.

Also, while praying for all those who are involved in relief efforts, the Pope encourages the people and those in positions of authority not to weaken in the face of such adversity, but rather in a spirit of solidarity and fraternal charity, he urges all those affected to help those who are most in need.

I ask Your Excellency's kindness in transmitting to the families of the deceased, the condolences of His Holiness, and expressing to the wounded, his paternal solicitude.

With these sentiments, the Holy Father imparts a special Apostolic Blessing as a sign of his affection for all Chileans.
