Preparing the report on the Convention against Torture

The Director of the Holy See Press Office issued a declaration today concerning the Convention against Torture.

In response to questions received from journalists, the Director of the Holy See Press Office, Father Federico Lombardi published the following declaration concerning the Holy See's presentation relative to the Report on the Convention against Torture:

Next month, the Holy See, along with Cypress, Lithuania, Guinea, Montenegro, Sierra Leone, Thailand and Uruguay, will present its Initial Report on the Convention against Torture (CAT) to the relevant Committee.  This is the ordinary procedure which is followed by all the Convention's State parties.

Taking into account the various types of obligations provided for by the Convention, the Holy See acceded to the Convention in 2002 exclusively in the name of and on behalf of the Vatican City State.

For this reason, the Holy See continues to implement its obligations on behalf of the Vatican City State, and to present periodic reports, according to the procedures foreseen by the Convention.
