I have learned the sad news of the departure of the beloved Cardinal Attilio Nicora and I wish to express to you and to your family members, as well as to the Archbishop and the confreres of your beloved Ambrosian Church, my sincere condolences.

He leaves a cherished memory and grateful esteem for the precious service he offered with singular competence both to the Church and to civil society in Italy - especially in the legal realm pertaining to the revision of the Lateran Concordat and the implementation of the economic support systems in the Catholic Church as well as the support he offered for the clergy - and to the Holy See, where he served rigorously and for an extended period as President first of APSA and then of the AIF.

Through the heavenly intercession of Mary, Most Holy, and of Saint John Paul II who sent him to guide the Diocese of Verona and subsequently created him Cardinal, I entrust my prayers for is priestly soul, while I send to you and to all those who are saddened at his death the Apostolic benediction.

Francis
