Departure from Portugal

After having lunch at the Nossa Senhora do Carmo House in Fatima, the Holy Father, Pope Francis traveled by car to the Monte Real Air Base for the departure ceremony.

Upon his arrival at the Air Base, at 3:15pm, the Pope was welcomed by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Nuno Duarte Rebelo de Sousa inside the building that includes the Control Tower.  There were approximately 700 of the faithful present at the departure ceremony.

The Holy Father boarded the TAP A320 aircraft which took off at 3:50pm for the flight to Italy.  It is expected to arrive at Rome's Ciampino International Airport at 9:45pm local time (GMT+1).

to the President of the Republic of Portugal

Immediately following the departure of the aircraft from Mont Real, Pope Francis sent the following telegram to the President of the Republic of Portugal:

As I leave Portugal, I wish to express my deep gratitude to Your Excellency and to all the beloved Portuguese people for your warm welcome and hospitality.  With the assurance of my prayers, I invoke upon the nation the divine blessings of peace and joy.
