On the way to Portugal

Pope Francis' nineteenth International Apostolic Voyage - which takes him on a Pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Fátima in Portugal on the occasion of the Centenary of the Apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary at the Cova da Iria - began today.

The aircraft carrying the Holy Father (an Alitalia A321) departed from Rome's Fumicino International Airport at 2:10pm this afternoon (GMT+1) and is expected to arrive at the Monte Real Air Base at 4:20 local time after a flight of three hours and ten minutes in duration.

Telegram of the Holy Father, Pope Francis
to the President of the Italian Republic

At the moment when he left Italian territory en route to Portugal, the Holy Father, Pope Francis sent the following telegram to the President of the Italian Republic:

To His Excellency
The Honorable Sergio Mattarella
President of the Italian Republic
Palazzo del Quirinale 00187 Rome

As I leave Italian airspace on my way to Portugal on the occasion of the Centenary of the Apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Fatima, I am pleased to send to you, Mister President, my respectful greetings, and while looking forward to meeting with pilgrims and especially with sick persons from all corners of the world who are gathered in that Marian Shrine to find light and hope, I invoke the blessings of the Lord on the entire nation of Italy and especially on those who are suffering in body or in spirit.

Francis
