Following the introduction of Twitter and Instagram presences of the Holy See, Peter's Pence will soon have a Facebook presence, first with a page in Italian and later with versions in Spanish and in English (expected in September and October). The objective of creating virtual space open to everyone for the sharing and increased knowledge about the charitable work that is supported through this secular initiative.
The choice to use a more widespread social network has two objectives. It aims to create a community that is open to everyone where the use of Facebook is wide spread - beyond the borders of Italy; it is also an effort to share and to recount the activities of this secular Office of Solidarity.
The presence of Peter's Pence on Facebook is intended to promote dialogue with people who have a common interest: to help those who are most in need and to concretely support the various works of charity. For centuries, Peter's Pence has been committed to supporting small and large projects all over the world, such as developing the Filippo Smaldone Institute for poor children and those who have hearing difficulties in Kigali (Rwanda). The Foundation has also awarded ten scholarships to assist displaced students from Iraqi Kurdistan and it has contributed to the opening of new primary schools for dalit children in India.
These works of charity and others, as well as future initiatives undertaken by Peter's Pence will be discussed - including news and information - on the Facebook page entitled Obolo di San Pietro (Saint Peter's Pence), remembering that traditionally, the collection is taken in Catholic churches throughout the world, according to the directives of each diocese, on the 29th of June, the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul or on the Sunday that is closest to that date.
As it was in the cases of other profiles and sites which are already active on various social platforms, this initiative too has been created at the will of the Holy See and as the fruit of close collaboration between the Secretariat of State, the Secretariat for Communication and the Governatorate of the Vatican City State.
Further information about the activity of Peter's Pence is available on the site which is currently active.
About Saint Peter's Pence
Saint Peter's Pence is economic assistance that the faithful offer directly to the Holy Father, for the many needs of the universal Church and for the works of charity in favour of those in need.
At the heart of Christianity is the practice of materially supporting those who have the mission of proclaiming the gospel and of caring for those who are in need (cf Acts 4:34; 11:29).
At the end of the eighth century, Anglo-Saxons decided to send an annual contribution to the Holy Father which became known as the Denarius Sancti Petri or the Elemosina a San Pietro. Pope Pius IV officially recognized Saint Peter's Pence with the publication of his Encyclical entitled Saepe venerabilis on 5 August 1871.
Beginning in 2016, the Holy See decided to make Saint Peter's Pence more accessible and to establish a dialogue with the faithful around the world about the need for and the effectiveness of charitable work in favour of those most in need. In order to achieve this goal, social channels dedicated to this longstanding tradition have been created.
