A new Bishop for Gaspé (Quebec)

This morning, the Holy Father, Pope Francis has accepted the resignation from the pastoral governance of the Diocese of Gaspé (Quebec) offered by His Excellency, Jean Gagnon, according to the prescriptions of Canon 401 § 1 of the Code of Canon Law.

The Pope has appointed His Excellency, Gaétan Proulx, O.S.M., formerly the Titular Bishop of Azura and Auxiliary Bishop of Quebec City as the new Bishop of Gaspé.


Meet the new Bishop of Gaspé

His Excellency, Gaétan Proulx, O.S.M. (Servite) was born on 27 May 1947 in Saint-Denis-de-Brompton, part of the Archdiocese of Sherbrooke (Quebec).

Having completed secondary school studies he entered the Congregation of the Servites of Mary and pursued philosophy studies at the University of Ottawa and at the Dominican University College in Ottawa.  For his studies in Theology, he attended Laval University where he obtained a Master's degree.  He then completed courses of study in Liturgy at the Institut catholique in Paris.

He made solemn profession on 2 December 1973 and was ordained a priest on 8 June 1975.

From 1978 to 1985 he served as Librarian and Assistant to the Master of Novices at the Servite Noviciate in Sillery and in Sainte-Foy (Quebec).  He was then named Prior in France (1985-1989), and then Formation Director for the Servites in France, Belgium and the Congo (1989-1991).  In 1991, he was transferred to Quebec, with the same responsibilities as Formation Director.  In 2000, he as named Prior for the Canadian Province (which includes France and Belgium).  In 2006, he was named Pastor of Notre-Dame-de-Foy parish in the Archdiocese of Quebec (Canada).

On 12 December 2011, he was named Titular Bishop of Azura and Auxiliary Bishop of Quebec.  He received episcopal consecration on 25 February 2012.

From 2012 to 2015, he served as Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia for the Archdiocese of Quebec.  At the level of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, he served as a member of the Permanent Committee for Communications.
