This morning, the Director of the Holy See Press Centre, Father Federico Lombardi, SJ issued the following statement concerning the tragedy that took place yesterday in Nice (France).
Throughout the night we have followed with great concern the terrible news from Nice.
On behalf of Pope Francis, we join in solidarity with the suffering of the victims and of the entire French people this day that should have been a great holiday.
We condemn in the strongest way every demonstration of senseless violence, of hatred, terrorism and any attack against peace.
The Holy Father, Pope Francis has sent a message of condolence to the Bishop of Nice expressing his prayers for the victims of the attack that took place last night in that city.
His Excellency, André Marceau
Bishop of Nice
As France was celebrating its national feast, blind violence has once more struck the country, in Nice, causing many casualties including children. Once again condemning such acts, His Holiness, Pope Francis expresses his profound sadness and spiritual closeness to the French people.
He entrusts to the mercy of God those persons who have lost their lives, and he shares deeply in the pain of family members who are grieving. He expresses his sympathy to all those who have been wounded, as well as those who came to their help, asking the Lord to support each of them in their moment of trial.
Imploring the gifts of peace and harmony from God, he invokes upon all the families who are affected by this tragedy and upon all people of France the benefit of divine blessings.

Secretary of State of His Holiness
