Condolences for one of the team

The President of the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Health Care Workers, Archbishop Zygmunt Zimowski, died overnight at the age of 67 after a long illness. He was born in Kupienin, Poland on 7 April 1949 and was ordained a priest on 25 May 1973.

Pope Saint John Paul II appointed Father Zimowski as Bishop of the Diocese of Radom, Poland, on 28 March 2002 and he was appointed President of the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Health Care Workers by Pope Benedict XVI on 18 April 2009.

In 2014, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

To Reverend Monsignor Jean-Marie Mate Musivi Mupendawatu

for the Pastoral Care of Health Care Workers
00120 Vatican City

I have learned the sad news of the death of His Excellency, Zygmunt Zimowski, President of your Pontifical Council, following a long and painful illness which he lived with a spirit of faith and Christian witness.

I wish to express my spiritual closeness in mourning with all the members of your Dicastery, while I also remember the generous ministry that he offered first as a pastor in the Diocese of Radom, then in service to the Holy See.  I raise fervent prayers to the Lord for his soul, confiding him to the maternal intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Poland.

With these sentiments, I invoke on behalf of this gifted collaborator, the eternal reward that is promised to all faithful servants of the gospel and I willingly impart to you, to the officials and the collaborators who are working with your Pontifical Council, as well as to the family members of the late Archbishop, the comfort of my Apostolic blessing.

Franciscus
