Liturgies for Holy Week at the Vatican

The schedule of liturgies which will be celebrated at the Vatican during Holy Week was released earlier today.


25 March 2018
Palm/Passion Sunday
XXXIII World Youth Day focused on the theme: Fear not Mary, for you have found favour with God (Lk 1:30)
At 10:00am local time (5:00am EDT), the Holy Father, Pope Francis will bless palm and olive branches and, at the end of the procession, will celebrate the Mass of the Passion of the Lord.

Thursday of Holy Week
At 9:30am local time (4:30am EDT), inside Saint Peter's Basilica, the Holy Father will preside over the concelebration of the Chrism Mass for the Diocese of Rome, along with Cardinals, Patriarchs, Archbishops, Bishops and priests (both diocesan and religious) who are present in Rome.

Good Friday
At 5:00pm local time (12:00 noon EDT), inside Saint Peter's Basilica, the Holy Father will commemorate the Passion of the Lord by presiding over the Liturgy of the Word, the Adoration of the Cross and the Communion Rite.

At 9:30pm local time (4:30pm EDT), inside the Roman Colosseum, the Holy Father will preside over the pious exercise of the Via Crucis.  At the conclusion of the Stations of the Cross, the Pope will address the faithful and will impart his Apostolic blessing.

Easter Vigil
At 8:30pm local time (3:30pm EDT), inside the atrium of Saint Peter's Basilica, the Holy Father will bless the new fire and then enter the Basilica in procession with the Pascal candle and the chanting of the Exsultet.  His Holiness will preside over the Liturgy of the Word, the Liturgy of Baptism of adults and the Eucharistic liturgy which will be concelebrated along with Cardinals, Bishops who which to be present as well as a few priests, the number of which will be determined according to the remaining space available.


1 April 2018
Easter Sunday
At 10:00am local time (5:00am EDT), in Saint Peter's Square, Pope Francis will celebrate Mass.  At the conclusion of the Mass, from the central balcony of the Basilica, His Holiness will impart his blessing Urbi et Orbi.
